Teachers & Students

The Glamorgan Archives provides a variety of services to the schools, colleges and universities within the local authorities we serve.

Familiarisation Days for Primary and Secondary Teachers

The Archives hosts and participates in familiarisation days organised by local authority education services and advisory services such as ESIS. These days are supported financially by Careers Wales and the Education Business Partnership, We focus on the National Curriculum topics that can be supported by materials in the Record Office such as maps, census returns, school records, and local sources of information for projects on the Victorians and World War Two.

Teacher Placements

We also offer organised placements for local teachers who wish to experience a work environment beyond the classroom. You may like an extended period of time away from the school to conduct research, develop work plans and resource packs for use in teaching. These can be organised with funding from the General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW/CymACC) for cover at your school. If you are interested, please contact us. There is no charge for this service, but we ask you to share with us any resource packs you create.

Student Visits

The Glamorgan Archives can accommodate visits by small groups of school pupils or students from colleges and universities. These should be teacher led and concentrate on sources available for the study of a particular topic. We are also happy to organise tours to see how a record office works behind the scenes with a chance to look at a selection of original documents . See Group Visits for further details, including charges.

Looking after your records

The Archives holds the records of a large number of Glamorgan schools. These include log books, admission registers, school histories, photographs etc.

Schools that deposit records with us retain ownership of these items, and can access them in our public searchrooms and use them to create exhibitions for special occasions such as school anniversaries.

By transferring these items to the Archives, schools are ensuring that they are cared for correctly. They will be stored in our secure strongrooms with their fire prevention systems, and will be packaged in protective boxes and folders to prevent their deterioration and ensure their availability to future generations.
