Building Regulation From the mid 19th century onwards many local authorities took advantage of new powers available to them requiring developers to submit plans for approval. Initially, under the Public Health Act 1850, this was to ensure that streets and buildings were constructed to certain minimum requirements. Later, under the 1947 Town and Country Planning Act and subsequent legislation, the suitability of the proposed premises in the intended location is considered. It is these plans, dating from the 1850s to 1960s that have been deposited at the Record Office.
