The Glamorgan Record Office holds a series of 40 000 building regulation plans which are at the heart of the project. The earliest plans date from 1857 and continue through to the 1960s. The collection includes schools, cinemas, sports stadia, hotels, public houses, coffee bars, air raid shelters, shops, workhouses, hospitals, offices, factories, churches, mosques, synagogues and houses.

In February 2002 the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded the Glamorgan Record Office £48 600 towards the cost of Cardiff the Building of a Capital. This project has:

  • Catalogued the plans so that they can be searched over the internet. Search for a plan.
  • Repaired a large number of damaged items so that they can be used by the public.
  • Repackaged all of the plans in special archival materials.
  • Mounted information on the Record Office web site to promote the use of the plans and other resources on Cardiff’s built heritage.

Update, January 2006

From January 2006 building plans for the former Cardiff Rural District Council for the years 1875 - 1926 have been linked to the on-line index. The following parishes are included in Cardiff RDC are:

Bonvilston, Lavernock, Leckwith, Lisvane, Llancarfan, Llanederyn, Llanfedw, Llanilltern, Llantrithyd, Llanvithyn, Michaelston-le-Pit, Pendoylan, Penmark, Pentyrch, Peterston-super-Ely, Porthkerry, Rhyd-y-gwern , Rudry, St Andrews Major, St Bride’s-super-Ely, St Fagans, St George’s,
St Lythans, St. Nicholas, Sully, Van, Welsh St. Donats, Wenvoe and Whitchurch.

Please note that the Cardiff RDC plans are held in an outstore, and we will need at least a weeks notice to bring them to our public searchroom for consultation.

Volunteer workers were an important part of the project, and we are very grateful to all those people who contributed by listing or conserving the plans.

The plans can be used for the study of many different subjects. By linking the plans with other documents in the Record Office, in Cardiff Central Library and in the Butetown History and Arts Centre it is possible to build up a detailed picture of the buildings, who used them and how they were used.
