| How did the docks contribute to the growth of Cardiff?Almost 100 times as many people lived in Cardiff in 1901 than lived there in 1801. This was amazing. According to the census returns the number of people living in Cardiff in 1801 was 1, 870. By 1851 this had increased to 23 085. Look at this extract from the census. It shows the reasons for the enormous changes in Cardiff as people saw them at the time.
The Glamorgan Canal opened in 1793. TasksLook at the map of Cardiff drawn in the late 1830s.
The Taff Vale railway opened in 1841. Look again at the map of Cardiff.
The Marquess of Bute who owned Cardiff Castle and other lands in Cardiff also owned lots of land in the South Wales valleys. Look again at the map of Cardiff
Now compare this with a map of Cardiff drawn in 1851.
Look at the diagram, drawn in 1874.
Now look at the Ordnance Survey map of the dock area. This was drawn in the 1870s.
In the 1871 census the population of Cardiff was recorded as 39 536. List all the reasons why people moved to Cardiff between 1851 and 1871. |
