The Millennium Stadium was built in 1999 on a site that once belonged to the Marquess of Bute. It was known as Cardiff Arms Park. It was a swampy meadow behind the Cardiff Arms Hotel. The Marquess stated that the ground could only be used for recreation.

Cardiff Rugby Football Club was formed in 1876 and used the park. Some members of the club played their first game in top hats and evening dress.
