Staff News

This quarter has also seen a number of new members of staff. Lisa, Lesley and Claire all began at the end of August.

Before moving to Cardiff Lisa was at the University of Wales Swansea, writing a PhD thesis on Women in the Rhondda Valleys; because of this she has been a regular user of the Glamorgan Record Office and is enjoying experiencing work ‘behind the scenes’. Lesley says: "I joined the Glamorgan Record Office as Records Assistant, and am usually found in either one of our Searchrooms at the Glamorgan Building. Tracing my own family tree had never occurred to me, but working in our Copy Searchroom, seeing how rewarding a pastime it can be, has certainly stirred up my enthusiasm to give it a go.

*

Outside of work I enjoy quite a few hobbies. Aside from family history, I have always enjoyed bike riding and am currently looking to learn a bit more about bike mechanics. Music is also a love of mine, I like listening to everything from Classical to R&B, and my other passion is for travel, and ‘seeing the world’ is certainly something I intend to do in the future."

Claire qualified as an archivist in 1997, working in Chester and Shrewsbury before her move to Cardiff. "Living in Abergavenny means lots of hill walking, then indulging in cosy pubs to make up for all that exercise!"

1901 Census

In anticipation of the popularity of the 1901 Census, available from the 2nd January 2002, the Copy Searchroom of the Glamorgan Record Office will be open on Saturday mornings in January from 9.30-1pm. Bookings are being taken now – so don’t delay.

To coincide with the release of the census we will be running hour long starter sessions on making the best use of the census as a family history source. Each session will cost £5 and will be held on Monday 14th and Monday 28th January 2002 at 10.30-11.30 am and 12.00-13.00 pm. Please contact the office to ask for more details, and to book a place.
