In February, the Record Office was pleased to welcome three librarians from the Baakleen National Library in the Lebanon. Maha Okaily, Mofeed Fouad Saeed and Chada Abou Shakra were on an exchange visit to Britain which was organised by the British Council. During their visit, they were given a tour of the Record Office, and were particularly interested in the work of the conservation section in preservation management and the care for and repair of maps and plans. |

This is the site of the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments Wales. The Commission has recently launched its 'Chapels Database', which lists basic information on all known nonconformist chapels in Wales. Capel, the Chapels Heritage Society, was formed to encourage the study and preservation of, and to safeguard the Nonconformist heritage of Wales. Their website includes details of chapels currently under threat. http://www.evidenceincamera.co.uk/ Evidence in Camera was created by The Aerial Reconnaissance Archives (TARA) at Keele University. The aim is to make 5.5 million photographs taken over occupied Western Europe by the Allies during World War II accessible via the internet. http://www.documentsonline.pro.gov.uk/ Documents Online allows you to access digital images from The National Archives' collections. Searching the index to these documents is free, and it is possible to download the images at a cost of £3 per document. Documents currently available include: World War I Campaign Medals - almost all of the men and women who saw active service overseas were awarded a campaign medal, making this essentially the most complete listing of all officers and soldiers who fought in World War I. Wills - the complete series of more than 1 million wills proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury from 1384 to 1858 are available to view, along with the wills of some famous names, including William Shakespeare's, which can be downloaded and viewed free of charge. New Releases - documents created by Government Departments are usually closed for 30 years. Most are released on 1 January, 30 years after the date of the last document on the file. The annual releases of public records are known as New Year's Openings, and many can be viewed here. Society and Law - this category contains records relating to immigration, crime and disasters, as well as legal documents. Among the images are photographs of prisoners from the Victorian period, the Magna Carta, convict transportation registers, and passenger lists which include Charlie Chaplin. A recent addition is a selection of key documents relating to gay and lesbian history. Many more records and documents are also available - have a look at the website for a summary. |

| A recent change in the law
affecting copyright means that the Record Office can no longer supply
photocopies of documents to third parties working on behalf of other people.
This means that researchers visiting the Record Office, including record agents, will have to ensure that their client signs any photocopying form before it is submitted to Record Office staff. To make this easier, our selection of photocopying forms can now be downloaded and printed out from our website (www.glamro.gov.uk). If you have any questions regarding this issue, please contact us here at the Record Office, or ask the archivist or searchroom supervisor on your next visit. |
