Television cameras were in the office to film the 1687 baptism entry of Joseph Potiphar “a black belonging to Sir Rowland Gwin” in the register of St John’s church, Cardiff. This is said to be the earliest entry relating to a black person in Wales, it is due to appear in an S4C programme “Gwalia Ddu” in the autumn.
March 13th was Charter Day in Cowbridge, celebrating the 750th anniversary of the town’s first charter granted in 1254 by Richard de Clare, Lord of Glamorgan. The Record Office put on a display in the Town Hall featuring the charters of 1421 and 1886, and the 1610 Ordinance Roll, and we also provided a transcription and translation of the medieval Latin charters. The Office’s collection of pamphlets, part of our library, was until recently kept in a cupboard in the back parts of the office. After reorganisation of the library, the pamphlets are now in boxes on the open shelves, freely available to browsers. The photographer Edwin Miles (1869-1929) was born in Bristol but came to Glamorgan around 1890, working as a Signalman on the railways. At the beginning of the twentieth century he set up as a photographer and eventually had premises in Bridgend and Cowbridge. The Record Office has received a collection of several hundred glass plate negatives from which Miles produced postcards showing the scenery, houses and churches of the Bridgend area and the Vale of Glamorgan. As the negatives are not really suitable for viewing by searchers, we are scanning them to produce positive images on paper and these will be made available in the searchroom. |
