ARCHIVE NEWS

Registers of three Catholic churches in Cardiff are now available on microfilm in the Copy Searchroom

St David’s (Cathedral) Bap. 1836-1919, Marr. 1849-1850, 1856-1899
St Peter’s Roath Bap. 1861-1918, Marr. 1862-1915
St Paul’s Bap. 1881-1908

We also hold copies of transcripts for St David’s 1836-1915, and St Peter’s 1861-1915.

The arrival of these microfilms will be welcomed by those requiring copies from the registers; the Record Office can now provide print-outs at 40p per sheet from the microfilm; previously copies could only be produced using digital photography making them slightly expensive.

‘Morels of Cardiff. The History of a Family Shipping Firm’ by John Morel Gibbs, a member of the family, was published in 1982. The Record Office has received original family papers and material collected by Dr Gibbs in writing the book, together with a minute book of the shipping firm 1888-1949, which is probably the only record of this firm to survive.

Fetching water, India. 1930s; photograph by Iorwerth Rees

Mr Iorwerth Rees of Canton, Cardiff was a long-standing friend of the Record Office. He undertook his own research and also compiled indexes to parish registers and censuses, and was a generous donor to the office library. Mr Rees died in December 2004, aged 94, and before his death we received a collection of photographs reflecting his career in the army in India in the 1930s and later in the colonial service in West Africa. These will be added to the substantial collection of family and local history papers which he presented over several years (DX254).

STAFF NEWS

In September Jean Good retired after more than twenty years as a volunteer in the office. Many large lists and indexes such as those for crew lists and shipping registers are evidence of her industry. She has also undertaken binding of facsimiles, repackaging, and helped at our open days.

We are grateful to Jean for her hard work and dedication over many years.
