GLAMORGAN CONSTABULARY REGISTERS

We have completed the first stage of a project to make a name index to the 14 volumes of registers which list the men and women serving in the Glamorgan Constabulary between about 1890 and 1950. The index, which is available on the shelves in the Document Searchroom, is now in two parts, covering volumes 1-10 and 11-14, but eventually these will be edited and combined into a single index containing over 5000 entries.

The registers give details of each officer’s appearance and background as well as service with the police. The information can be combined with other sources in the large police archive which the Record Office holds such as personnel files, orders, minutes and reports.

POLICE PHOTOGRAPHS

The police of the county force and the borough forces of Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil and Swansea all gathered large collections of photographs which passed to the South Wales Police when the forces were amalgamated in 1969 These are not scene-of–crime or forensic photographs but they record and illustrate many aspects of police work. A list is now available under headings such as ‘Dogs’, ‘Horses’, ‘Transport’, ‘Strikes’, ‘VIPs’, ‘Air raids’; the largest section of all is pictures of groups and individuals and this is still being worked on as we look for the best way to make the information accessible.

STAFF NEWS

This quarter saw the retirement of Ann Sefton, the Administrative Officer, after 20 years of service. She joined the office under Mrs Patricia Moore and witnessed many changes. One of Ann’s first jobs in the office was the photocopying of Parish Registers. Her knowledge of the area and its personalities was invaluable and her memory of the Office’s history, irreplaceable. She will be missed by both staff and searchers who all wish her a long and happy retirement.

Two temporary archivist positions were filled in the last quarter; Laura Russell joined us in November, Laura previously worked as the Records Manager for Peterborough City Council. David Morris who was previously the ANW project archivist at the Glamorgan Record Office filled the other position.

NEW GLAMORGAN RECORD OFFICE

To comply with procurement rules, on 21 October a notice was placed in the Official Journal of the European Union advertising the new Glamorgan Record Office. The notice ask for developers to come forward with a site in Cardiff and proposals to design and build the new Office. A number of enquiries were received and a standard information pack sent out. Tenderers had to return a detailed Pre-Qualification Questionnaire by 8 December from which a short-list will be selected to develop full proposals. The short-list will be agreed by the end of January and it is hoped that a decision on the preferred developer can be made by April 2006.

The brief to which the developers will be working continues to be refined. Record Office staff have visited recently built archive repositories in England to learn from any mistakes which may have been made and to steal any particularly good ideas which might fit into plans for service delivery in the new building. The brief is available on the Office web site under New Glamorgan Record Office as a ‘pdf’ file called Design Criteria Statement. Do take a look if you have a chance.

ARCHIVE NETWORK WALES

The ANW website was launched in September. On it you can find descriptions of more than 4000 archive collections held in local authority record offices, universities and other bodies in Wales. Glamorgan Record Office has so far contributed over 370 descriptions, and rising.
The site can be searched for words and phrases and will bring together information on archives held across the country. The site will continue to grow although the project which created it is drawing to a close, as we and the other organisations carry on adding details of new collections.
