ARCHIVE NEWS

The Office has received some interesting accessions this quarter, notably:

D211 W&CT Jones Ship-owners of Cardiff C19-20

The papers comprise the records of W. & C. T. Jones Steamship Company Ltd. of Cardiff, along with some personal papers of the owner, Mr William Edwin Jones. In addition, the collection includes miscellaneous papers relating to the Davies Family of Pontypridd and Cardiff; the Broomfield Family of Barry; Frederick Childs and Company Ship-owners of Cardiff; the Richard Family of Cardiff; the Briffeth Family of Cardiff, and collected personal and family papers.

D397 S. Chivers Industrial Properties Ltd and Chivers family papers, 1919-1982

S. Chivers and Co. Ltd was incorporated in 1895 to take over the malt vinegar brewers established by Samuel Chivers (1843-1917) in the 1880s, originally at East Canal Wharf, Cardiff. Samuel Chivers worked in partnership with Isaac Padfield. The partnership was continued by Samuel's two sons. The use of 'S. Chivers and Co. Ltd' was dropped after the Second World War for the sale of jam and marmalades in favour of 'Golden Grove’. A report in 1975 led to a change of name to S. Chivers Industrial Properties Ltd. and the business was sold to Singlo Holdings Ltd. The lease to British Vinegars Ltd was surrendered in 1981 and the company wound up. The collection includes administrative and financial papers and a short history of the firm and the Chivers family.

D398 Milsom photographs of Cardiff goods station 1929

Photographs of the Great Western Railway Co. Newtown Goods Yard, Cardiff. The earlier depot was reorganised and rebuilt by the company 1928-1929 to accommodate the construction of a system of freight trains operating between major towns and cities enabling delivery of goods on the day following despatch, known as the Registered Transits Scheme. The photographs were discarded when the goods yard was closed and saved from destruction by the depositor.

DCR Crawshay family of Treforest C19-20

Papers relating to the Crawshay family of Treforest. Including a series of Victorian photographs of Tudor Crawshay and other family members, correspondence from family members who fought in the Boer War and letters sent from the trenches in the First World War. There are also estate accounts and material relating to other prominent Glamorgan families, including the Nicholls and Carnes who were related to the Crawshays by marriage.

NEW GLAMORGAN RECORD OFFICE

Tenders have now been issued to developers competing to design and build the New Glamorgan Record Office. Each developer has a site in Cardiff on which they propose to build the new GRO. These sites are at:

Callaghan Square
Dumballs Road
Hadfield Road
The Leckwith Stadium
The Maltings, East Tyndall Street

Bidders have to prepare proposals meeting the requirements set out in the Design Criteria Statement (available on the GRO web site.) To assist in this design process the GRO is providing client time each week for the teams to discuss their plans.

Tenders will be opened on 22 May. Following this a period of consultation and assessment will begin leading to the selection of a preferred developer. Construction will start in autumn 2006 and the new facility will open early in 2008.

For further details of the New Glamorgan Record Office please contact Gary Tuson at the GRO.

USEFUL WEBSITES

Would you like to try something new ?

The National Archives have just produced an on-line tutorial where you can learn Latin for Local and Family Historians in twelve lessons.

Until 1733 many church, manorial and court records were written in Latin. Find out for yourself what they’re all about—no previous knowledge necessary!

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/latin/beginners

You can also practise reading old handwriting on the National archives palaeography site. This on-line web tutorial will help you learn to read the handwriting found in documents written in English between 1500 and 1800.
