Mrs Patricia Moore
Former Glamorgan Archivist, Mrs Patricia Moore, died of cancer on 18 May 2002, aged 74. Mrs. Moore, who was born in Cardiff and educated in Penarth, at Howells School, Llandaff, and University College, Cardiff, devoted her entire professional life to the Glamorgan Record Office, which she joined in 1949. She became archivist to the joint service established in 1974, remaining in the post until her retirement in 1993. Her legacy to record keeping in Glamorgan included an early commitment to family historians which widened the traditional user base of the office, the establishment of an area office, later a fully fledged county archive service, in West Glamorgan, and a high quality range of publications. She was responsible for developing links with cultural institutions in the Ukraine through the Hughesovka Research Archive, which explored the Welsh origins of the industrial city now known as Donetsk.

Mrs Moore’s contribution to the intellectual life of south Wales continued into retirement. She was a trustee of the Cambrian Archaeological Association and of the Welsh Historic Gardens Trust, chair of the Glamorgan History Society, president of the South Wales Record Society, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and an Officer of the Order of St. John’s Priory for Wales and its honorary archivist. Despite increasing ill health she edited several editions of Archaeologia Cambrensis and published articles on garden history. Her funeral took place at All Saints Church, Penarth, on 30 May.

A significant collection, deposited this quarter, comes from the Powell Duffryn Group, on the closure of their offices in Bracknell. The group has presented a large collection of company records which complement our existing holdings with the continuation of many series of board and committee minutes.
Deposits received through the Women’s Archive of Wales included minutes of the Cowbridge branch of Merched y Wawr following an appeal by the national organisation for its records to be placed in local record offices.
The list that follows gives brief details of accessions received by gift, deposit or purchase for the period 1 March to 31 May 2002. Please note that not all items shown are available for immediate consultation, and some dates given are approximate. Some items may be on restricted access. As some of you may be aware Charlotte Hodgson, the Principal Archivist, has broken her leg and will be away from the office until the autumn.

A new archivist, Rhian Phillips, has been appointed and will be starting at the office in July. Rhian qualified as an archivist in 2001 and spent a year working at Aberystwyth and Lampeter Universities before moving to Cardiff at the end of June. She says, ‘I am enjoying life in the city – especially the shopping - and am looking forward to the challenge of working in a County Record Office for the first time’.
Anna McNally, the new archive trainee will be starting shortly, replacing Lisa Snook who is off to Liverpool to take up her place on the archive training course.

Time to move on… |
The Record Office is rapidly running out of space in our present home, and we are looking for a new one! A joint working party, including representatives from all the Local Authorities that we serve, has been formed to get the process underway. As part of our search, we would like to gather some information from all our users and have prepared a very short questionnaire. Copies are available from reception, and we are hoping to have an electronic version on the Internet site shortly. |
Cardiff: the building of a Capital
The Glamorgan Record Office’s lottery funded project, announced in the last newsletter, will soon be underway. The HLF has awarded the Record Office £48,600 of funding, to be used to catalogue and conserve over 40,000 building regulation plans dating from the 1870s to the 1960s. We are currently recruiting two project workers, and hope to be starting the work in August.
