This
quarter has seen a number of valuable additions to holdings of religious
organisations: including Cardiff’s United Synagogue and Jewish Representative
Council, Bethel Baptist Church, Barry and United Reformed Church’s Cardiff and
Aberdare congregations.
One of the
most interesting acquisitions in the quarter has been a collection of legal and
family papers received from a descendant of the Nicholl Carne family of St
Donats and Llantwit Major. These include deeds and related settlements
concerning family property in Glamorgan.

that follows gives brief details of accessions received by gift, deposit or

Mrs Moore and Susan Edwards respond to an emergency, 1989 In August Susan Edwards completed twenty years service in
the Glamorgan Record Office. Starting as an Assistant Archivist after posts in
Gwynedd and Warwickshire County Record Offices and the Modern Records Centre at
Warwick University, Susan worked under two Glamorgan Archivists before taking
on the job herself in 1997. ‘In bringing the Glamorgan Record Office into the
21st century I hope I have been able to sustain the best of its past’ she says.
With two teenaged sons and a house in need of constant repair, her favourite
leisure activity would be sleeping if she had any time for it. The Record
Office has been joined by two new members of staff who are working on the
Heritage Lottery funded project, Cardiff: the building of a capital. Stephen
and Christian have been working steadily at the Atlantic Wharf Office through
the 40, 000 building plans. You may
have noticed a new face in the searchrooms, Anna McNally has joined the staff
as archive trainee for this year, and has been discovering a taste for research
after listing the diaries of Robert Drane, an antiquarian and naturalist based
in Cardiff at the turn of the 19th century.
The
Gathering the Jewels project is now well underway: the Record Office was asked
to select 350 images from our 7 km of shelving reflecting significant areas of
our holdings. A two
volume survey of the Marquis of Bute’s Glamorgan Estates, by David Stewart,
1824, was sent to the National Museum of Wales to be photographed, and the
Wesley Letters, contained within the Fonmon collection, have also been
digitised. More material from the Office will appear on the website in the next
few months. Further information and the latest newsletter can be found on the website at
www.gtj.org.uk Letter from Charles Wesley, January 12
The
