Since November of last year we have
another new member of staff dedicated to the task of preserving our ever increasing
and varied archives. Rachel Mackenzie has been carrying out preventative conservation
measures, such as re-packaging and repairing items, ensuring it is possible
for them to be seen and handled. If you are keen to take steps in preserving
your own family archive we strongly recommend attending one of the courses run
by our chief conservator, Mike Hodgson.

Almost 15,000 out of the 40,000 building plans have now been listed and conserved. A number of volunteers have been working extremely hard to help repair and preserve some of the larger plans. The project is currently on target for completion by August 2003 |
| The Glamorgan Record Office has recently completed cataloguing the diaries of Robert Drane of Cardiff, from 1881 up to his death in 1914. Drane was a chemist by trade, but he was also a founding member of the Cardiff Naturalists Society and keen antiquarian. | |
|
| The diaries record Drane’s
uncensored opinions on everyone whom he encounters, from his shop assistants,
to members of Cardiff society and visiting lecturers such as Winston Churchill.
Other incidents recorded in the diaries include the Marquess of Bute’s admirable behaviour during a fire at banquet in the castle in 1891 and Drane’s first drive in a motor car, as well as his ideas about the proposed channel tunnel in 1882 and that the practice of sending Christmas cards would never catch on. |
The First Friday group is an informal
gathering of students who use the Record Office in the course of their postgraduate
research. The group meets on the first Friday of each month at 2pm in the coffee
shop of the Glamorgan Building to discuss progress, sources and anything else
that comes up! If you are interested please come along to the next meeting on
Friday 6 February, or contact the office, and we will add you to the mailing
list.

| Over the last quarter the
office has carried out several surveys in addition to making our usual
feedback forms available. Below you will find a summary of some of the
comments we have received over the year, as well as our response to them. |
Many users praised the record office staff. Comments included: ‘… courteous, efficient and cheerful assistance’ and ‘what a marvellous place- friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff’. |
Some users expressed concern at the closure of the office for two weeks and that this closure period wasn’t well advertised. |
|
Our response: The closure period is a valuable opportunity to undertake work in the office in a way that is not possible when open to the public. Work carried out in November included rebinding almost 150 parish registers, as well as listing the minutes and writing summary descriptions of the official collections held in the office. The latter was particularly important to enable compliance with Freedom of Information legislation. To ensure that any future closure is as widely publicised as possible
we will arrange to have notices displayed at local libraries, we will
notify all county record offices in England and Wales, we will post
a notice on the front page of our website and we will inform everyone
who contacts the record office. |
|
All the material
offered to this project has now been digitised and will gradually make
its way on to the website at www.gtj.org.uk.
Items submitted by the office included an excellent series of maps of
Merthyr Tydfil, drawn up in 1851 by the Local Board of Health to enable
proper sewerage and a water supply to be installed. Beautifully coloured,
the originals are too fragile for production and will be much more widely
accessible in a digital format. |
