Georgios undertaking repair work in
our conservation studio

The staff at the Glamorgan Record Office have recently been joined by Georgios Bantas. Georgios is a first year student in Archaeological Conservation at the University of Wales, Cardiff. As part of his degree programme, he is required to undertake a work experience placement. So for the next month Georgios will be based in the Record Office’s conservation department, where he’ll be working with our conservator, Michael Hodgson. He will be undertaking a broad spectrum of archive conservation work, but his main tasks will be completing more complicated repair work on the Cardiff: the Building of a Capital building regulations plans, along with treatment of some of our large coal maps.

Useful Websites

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Cardiff/Cardiffyes.html

These pages provide a useful index to the excellent Cardiff Yesterday series of books, which contain a great deal of information on, and numerous photographs of Cardiff’s past.

http://www.eh.net/ehresources/howmuch/poundq.php

This site allows you to calculate the current value of sums of money from the past. This is especially useful if you would like to put a current value on court fines levied or wages paid to Glamorgan men and women over the past centuries.

http://www.movinghistory.ac.uk

Moving History is a newly launched web resource on film archives. It provides an in-depth guide to the UK’s 12 public sector moving image archives, including the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales. It gives detailed information on the collections held by these repositories, along with a selection of film and television clips. It also offers guidance on accessing these archives, and provides links and contact points for further information. The clips from Wales include After the Summer: the changing face of Tiger Bay and The Opening of the Prince of Wales Hospital.

http://www.cardiff.gov.uk/libraries/

The "Anecdotal Cardiff" archive comprises a series of reminiscences by Cardiff residents, collected together by Jennie Savage. The archive was constructed over 6 months at Cardiff Central Library. Noticeboards at the library and regular articles in the South Wales Echo were used to invite people to come and talk about Cardiff as they remembered it. After 6 months at the library over 60 people had been interviewed. This mass of memories has now become an accessible source of information on Cardiff, available via the Council’s library service webpages.

Archives Task Force Consultation Day

The Archives Task Force was set-up by Resource, the Council for Museums Archives and Libraries, in order to carry out an in-depth analysis and review of the state of the UK’s archives, ensuring that they are better used, better cared for and better understood. The Task Force has been holding consultation days across the UK, in order to discuss key issues, including funding and access, with both archive professionals and users. The Welsh consultation Day was held on May 19th. Members of Glamorgan Record Office staff, along with a number of Record Office users, attended the consultation, where priorities were debated with a panel of Task Force members and Resource staff.
