STAFF NEWS

During the past quarter, the Glamorgan Record Office has bid farewell to two members of staff. Claire Collins spent two years at the Record Office, firstly as a temporary archivist and then as project archivist on the 'Cardiff: the Building of a Capital' project. We wish Claire all the best in her new role as archivist at Gloucestershire Record Office. We also waved goodbye to our preservation assistant Rachel Mackenzie, and wish her well in her new home.

New members of staff at the Glamorgan Record Office

New members of staff at the Glamorgan Record Office (l-r) Hayden Burns, Laura Gardner and Stefan Walker

It hasn't all been goodbyes, though, as we've also welcomed a number of new members of staff. Firstly, you might have seen a new face welcoming you into the Record Office over the past few months. Stefan Walker is our new Receptionist. “I’ve taken over from Laura on reception and switchboard. If you have an enquiry then I’ll do my best to help you”.

Our new Trainee Archivist, Laura Gardner, began work in September; "hopefully you'll all have met me in one of the searchrooms". We also have a new project archivist based at the Glamorgan Record Office. Hayden Burns will be working with us for the next two years producing catalogue descriptions for inclusion in the Archives Network Wales project. Hayden has recently qualified as an archivist, and says that he's "very excited about the current project".

SCRAP THE COUNCIL TAX – HERE’S SOME ALTERNATIVES…!

Are you concerned about reported council tax raises? Is there a better way to fund our local services? How about a tax based on the number of windows or hearths in your house?

These were the kinds of taxes levied in the 16th to 19th centuries, as documented in the Quarter Sessions records stored at the Glamorgan Record Office. Ownership of horses, carriages, servants or land were also the basis for taxes at this time.

The income tax assessment dicscovered amongst the Glamorgan Quarter Session (Q/D/O/1)

Recently Glamorgan archivists made the unusual discovery of a surviving income tax assessment amongst the Quarter Sessions records - income tax returns were generally not preserved. This return dates from the year that income tax was introduced, 1798, and gives details of Mr James Walters, a Custom House Officer from Penarth, who paid £3 in tax on ‘offices or employments of profit’ (Q/D/O/1).

The Glamorgan Quarter Sessions records are a goldmine of information relating to the administration of the County from 1719-1971. They include records on county gaols, lunatic asylums and the constabulary. Other records document the activities of the Quarter Sessions Court in session, including minutes, indictments and presentments, oath rolls to name a few. The records relating to land tax assessments also served the dual purpose of acting as registers of electors, in a time when the right to vote was based on the ownership of freehold land.

ARCHIVE NETWORK WALES

Archive Network Wales, or ANW, is an on-line searchable database which will allow users to identify major archives relating to their topic of interest, and the repositories holding them. By December 2005, it will include more than 4000 records created by the project team, describing the catalogued holdings of the project partners. The site allows simple word and phrase searches, and is also indexed by subject, personal name, company name and place. Further information can be found at www.archivesnetworkwales.info

Work on the Glamorgan Record Office contribution to the Archive Network Wales is now underway. Hayden, our project archivist, is busy creating collection level descriptions of archives for inclusion in the database, and so far 144 Glamorgan entries have been submitted, and should be on the website soon.
