Structuring an Enquiry

Be Concise

It will help us in answering your research enquiry if you can be concise in identifying exactly what you want. Keeping it short and accurate will save us time and avoid the risk of duplicating research. To deal with your enquiry quickly we need to know:

    • Who you are (full name)
    • What you want us to do
    • Detail required/known (names, dates, places)

Be Specific

What do you want? State exactly what you want us to do and identify specifics such as names, dates, and places. But only supply information that is relevant to your enquiry. If requesting information about a particular person for family history, please provide as much of the following information that you have:

    • Name (alternative names, known as)
    • Date & place of birth
    • Date & place of death
    • Date & place of marriage
    • Details of where lived (address or village/ town / city) with dates if possible

The more information you supply the better your chances that we can find what you want.

Prevent Duplication

The last thing we want to do is to charge you for research which you have already done. Please tell us what reference documents, online catalogues, and web resources you have consulted and what you have already found. This is best done as an attachment.

If you would like a hard-copy reply please tell us and make sure that you include a postal address.

Structure your Request

An easy to read request broken down under a series of headings such as:

    • Research you wish to commission
    • Facts (names, dates, places, … etc.)
    • Research you have already undertaken (reference documents, catalogues, online resources, … etc.) [If long submit as an attachment]

will help us identify your requirements quickly and easily.
