What happens
here?
At
the
Glamorgan Record Office we...
Collect
records relating to
the history of Glamorgan and its people. Records can range
from paper, plans, photographs, parchments, personal diaries
and council minutes. For more details see our collecting
policy.
We are particularly interested in locating records in
imminent danger of destruction or decay so that they may
be saved for future generations.
Catalogue
records so that people can locate
material which may be of interest to them.
For more information on our cataloguing work, see the ‘The
Collection’ section of our website.
Preserve
and conserve records, ensuring
that items deposited, donated and transferred to the record
office are held in the best environmental conditions and
are packaged in appropriate materials.
Details of our conservation services can be found in the
‘Services’ section.
Make the records available in
our public searchroom. Opening hours and further details
on the services offered in our searchroom can be found in
the ‘Services’ section.
Offer advice on using the
records, so that you get the most out of the time you spend
here. If you would like advice before visiting, or if you
can’t visit in person, have a look at the ‘Research
and Enquiries’ page in our ‘Services’
section.
Give talks to visiting
groups, such as local societies,
evening classes, groups of teachers, or local authority
employees. Information on organising such a visit can be
found in our ‘Services’
section.
Mount
exhibitions
to let people know who we are, where
we are, and what it is we do. We use our unique documents
to make displays and exhibitions so that more people get
to see and find out about our records and services. We
have several compact travelling exhibitions available
to display in libraries, local history fairs and other
venues. We also prepare special exhibitions to coincide
with specific anniversaries and special events. You can
also hire a 'virtual expert', DVD's of staff talks on
popular subjects. See our 'Services'
section for details.
If you need help with planning an exhibition or finding
out what documents we hold please contact us for advice.
